There is title turmoil once again in New England Championship Wrestling and the matter will be resolved on Friday night, February 1 at the Knights of Columbus, 25 Teed Drive, Randolph, MA with an 8 PM bell time as NECW presents SNOWBRAWL.
On the last NECW ONLINE UPDATE, we showed the match that took place on a charity event December 8 inFall River, MA between NECW Heavyweight Champion, Sean Burke and Antonio “The Promise” Thomas. The match ended with Thomas having Burke locked in a submission hold when the time limit expired and the match was ruled a draw. Burke, however, suffered a broken ankle during the course of the match and his ability to defend the title was in question.
Initially, it was thought the injury was not serious and that Burke would return to action in 4 to 6 weeks. After further examination, Burke’s doctors informed him that he would need a minimum of 3 months before being able to return to the ring.
After consulting with Burke and his doctors, NECW officials determined that Burke would be unable to defend the championship in the near term and Burke has agreed to surrender the title on February 1. Officials also determined that the two top contenders, Antonio Thomas and Johnny Thunder will wrestle on February 1st with the winner, becoming champion. NECW officials also determined that when Sean Burke is fit to return to the ring, he will automatically be deemed the number one contender and will receive a championship match as soon as it can be arranged.
On Friday night, February 1, Antonio Thomas and Johnny Thunder will wrestle in the main event with the championship on the line.
NECW Tag Team Champions, Da House Party will defend against The Crown Jewels, however, “Mr. Fabulous” Tony Ulysses will be banned from the building.
